about

Lexis (speech); Mimesis (imitation) from "on Poetics" composed by Scott Edward Godin (2014).

on Poetics
for classical guitar trio (2014)

"Poetry is something more philosophic and of graver import than history: for poetry tends to express the universal, history the particular."

Aristotle, Poetics (c. 335 BC)

Aristotle’s Poetics is the earliest-surviving work of dramatic theory and the first philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory. It is in part response to Plato’s Republic, as Aristotle argues against his former teacher by describing both the social function and necessity of art. I chose this text as the basis for my composition, as many of the concepts introduced by Aristotle can be interpreted in musical and theatrical ways, while creating a unified work paying homage to both concepts and values from the original treatise. The work consists of seven short movements, revealing the concepts outlined in Aristotle’s work.
